How to run a FAA approved color vision test using Waggoner CCVT

The CCVT is one of the approved tests that AMEs can use to test pilot applicants color vision. This article explains the test and walks through steps to ensure testing is correct.

The FAA color vision test is a randomized, adaptive test used to detect genetic and acquired color vision deficiencies.

  • Always included: General + Tritan sections

Test Structure

  • General Section: 25 plates (includes 1 practice plate)
  • Tritan Section: 12 plates (detects acquired deficiencies)

Additional Sections (if needed):

  • Triggered if 5+ misses in General
    • Protan (Section 3): Red deficiencies
    • Deutan (Section 4): Green deficiencies

Timing & Controls

  • Plates are displayed: 3 seconds
  • Response time: 7 seconds (test plate turns white)
  • No response = miss

How to Start

  1. Go to Home Screen
  2. Select FAA Test → Start Test
  3. Enter patient information (if needed)
  4. Review instructions with patient or have the read on own
  5. Press Enter or to begin

Results

  • Shows missed plates by section
  • Displays PASS / FAIL (FAA standards)

Saving Options:

  • Auto-saved to device
  • Option to export to other location or print
